When you are starting a heating system in your home, the first thing you should know is that this job does not end when you leave the house. You will have to maintain the heating system and, if needed, if you have an electric heater, you will have to look for a way to recondition it.
The first step in maintaining your heating system is to turn it off in your house. At this point, it is a good idea to turn off the other systems that have come on. Take note of any appliances that were left on for the night and turn them off as well.
Keep all of the windows and doors closed during the day. Don’t leave your window open all night. Windows allow air to get in and out of your home and some of the air may get trapped in the room or be drawn into your walls, making the room warmer than it should be.
When you go out to the pool at night, try to keep the house dark. This can be done by turning off the lights in the kitchen and other rooms that can be used while you are away from the house. It is a good idea to close the blinds in the bathroom and other rooms with windows because of the heat.
The next step to do is to turn off the heat in your house. If you have an electric heater, make sure that it is turned off when you are not at home. Leave it off for a day before you move your furniture out of the house. This way, your heater will be off while it cools down and, when it is ready, you can use it again.
If you have an A/C unit, there is still more that you need to do. When you leave the house, make sure that the fans are off so that the air will circulate. After you have finished your work in the house, you can turn on the fans to circulate the air again.
When you are in the midst of a cold spell, be sure to check your furnace filter. Regular checks will help you maintain your heating system and will keep it from failing you when it is time to replace the furnace.
